First notes from Willamette Innovators Night - Mike McInally
However, the show was stolen by presentations from Loyan Roylance of ProWorks, who spoke on the topic of “What Social Media Has Taught Me About Sex” (which I choose here not to excerpt in any way), and Aaron Hockley, a Portland photographer who spoke on his passion: Loving photographs of trains, or as he put it, “train porn.”

Yes, you read correctly; The Ignite Corvallis 2 proposal deadline is extended to this Sunday, October 18th at Midnight.

The selection committee is unable to meet to select the lineup until Monday the 19th so we have extended a submission reprieve to the masses.

You can also edit existing proposals up to Sunday night as well. If you have a proposal submitted we will notify you on Monday evening if you are "in". However, even with the submission extension, you *may* want to start working through your presentation this weekend just in case you are selected.

Share Your Burning Ideas At Ignite Corvallis 2 -- Deadline Approaching Fast (Oct 15th - This Thursday)

Posted on October 13, 2009 by Jason P

The Ignite Corvallis proposal submission deadline is getting really close! This Thursday, October 15th at midnight!

I love this post from Ignite Portland talking about the kind of ideas they want:

"What Keeps *YOU* Up At Night?" - Ignite Portland

The best Ignite talks (and we’ve had a ton of great ones - check out some of the videos from past Ignite Portland events to find inspiration!) are the ones that bring out your “burning ideas”. The stuff that keeps you awake at night. The stuff you can’t stop talking about when you’re around your friends. The stuff that you’d do for free, even if it wasn’t a paying job. That’s the kind of talk idea we’re looking for.

That being said, please remember that Ignite Portland is *NOT* the place to be all self promotional or spammy. Talk ideas that seem too spammy will be rejected, in favor of those that show more passion, interestingness, and spark. So be sparky, not spammy!

Share your burning ideas at Ignite Corvallis 2!

Remember the deadline for submitting a proposal is October 15th!

2. If you know someone who might be a good Ignite speaker, encourage them to check it out! Especially if they have a funny story, great life experience, some research, or just have something to say. Point them at this blog or at the twitter account @IgniteCorvallis.

3. Volunteer to help. Let us know what you can help with!

We Want YOU To Present Your Ideas At Ignite Corvallis 2!

Posted on August 12, 2009 by Jason P

Do you have a burning idea that you want to share? How about some knowledge you want to drop on Corvallis? Maybe you just want to make people laugh?

Then we need you to submit your Ignite Corvallis 2 Proposal!

The deadline for proposal submission is Thursday, October 15th.

Need to know more before you can commit? Take some advice from people who have braved the 5 minute presentation and lived:

You Can Present at Ignite Corvallis - Paul Bausch

[...]
Having been through one Ignite Corvallis, I can offer some reasons why you might want to give it shot:

1.) Ignite hones ideas. Taking an idea from something you're kicking around to something you have to present to an audience forces you to refine your ideas. It's a way to make yourself spend some time solidifying and creating something valuable out of them.

Ignite Corvallis - Powerpoint doesn't have to be lame - Chris Nordyke

[...]
There were a ton of people at the event, and yet there was a great (dare I say) forgiving tone to the room. Everybody was excited, and in a way, living vicarously through the presenters. They're less spectators, and more participants. But it is a spectacle none the less. I was scheduled right in the middle of the roster. Fortunately, before my turn, there were several funny presentations to loosen up the room and also calm the nerves in the dugout.

Ignite Corvallis 2 Moved To November!

Posted on March 14, 2009 by Jason P

Due to multiple circumstances, we are postponing Ignite Corvallis 2 until the Fall. It is a decision that we have agonized over the last week and even got advice from some Ignite Portland organizers. It was our intention to create an event with a similar feel as Ignite Portland but with a fit that works for Corvallis. As time moved on, both of our busy schedules worked against us getting everything planned and marketed in a timely manner. With only about a week to go before the submission deadline we only had a few proposals when we were hoping to have more proposals by that point. We were concerned that we wouldn't get enough strong proposals to make the event a success and didn't want to leave a negative impression for the community. It was important to us that we did this event right, not half right.

When is Ignite Corvallis 2 going to be instead you ask? We are planning on moving it to early-November to coincide with High Tech After Hours (HTAH). Last year we held it at the High Tech After Hours event around the same time and had great participation and attendance. Our plan is to have Ignite Corvallis 2 during the same week as HTAH and hopefully even on the same day. However, this time we plan to host it in a bigger venue, have food and drinks, and more time to network and socialize. Overall, we think we can put on a much better event by getting help from the HTAH organizers and sponsors along with having more time to get more community interaction and involvement.

If you have already submitted a proposal, we would love for you to keep the idea! The proposals we have so far are great and I know that many of them will probably make the final lineup come November!

So whats next? We plan on having a session or two at Beaver BarCamp on April 4th covering planning and ideas for the next Ignite Corvallis and we may even try to have a mini-Ignite towards the end of BarCamp. If you want to be a part of the Ignite presentations at BarCamp, please come and be a part of the unconference! There will be limited time and seating space but we can still have a few presentations.

Once again, we apologize for the late decision on this and feel free to leave comments. It was very difficult for us to make but we feel its the right one that will benefit the event for Corvallis. If you want to be a part of the planning for Ignite Corvallis let us know or come to Beaver BarCamp on April 4th!

You Can Present at Ignite Corvallis

Posted on February 27, 2009 by Paul Bausch

Hi All. Last September, Jason emailed to let me know he was putting together the first Ignite Corvallis and he asked me to present. I had three immediate reactions:

1.) Wow, cool, can't wait to go to that.
2.) But speak? What do I have to talk about?
3.) I hate public speaking, no way.

So naturally I responded honestly right away with, "I'll think about it." I went to the first Ignite Portland in 2007 and enjoyed the energy so I had some idea of what I'd be getting into. I left that event wondering how I would take on the challenge, but didn't think I'd make the trip to Portland with my own talk. So even though I balked at Ignite Corvallis at first, I started thinking about what I could present. I thought about the idea from time to time like I might with a blog post, and toyed with different topics that might be good for a presentation.

A couple months went by and Jason sent a quick email, "How about that talk?" I finally decided to bite the bullet and turn one of my ideas into a presentation. I picked a topic and sent a title. The rest just fell into place. I wrote an outline, put together some slides, and practiced hitting my points in five minutes for a day or so. The event was fun, the packed house was very kind, my talk went ok (note to self: more practicing next time!), and I got to meet some folks in the process.

2.) Ignite connects. In the process of presenting you'll meet some other folks in Corvallis working on interesting ideas. There isn't much time for talking at Ignite itself, but presenting there is a way to introduce yourself to everyone and open the door to future connections.

3.) Ignite informs. You have good information! Everyone has a unique perspective or experience to share. By sharing your ideas in public, you can guide others who are working on similar projects or give people in a completely different field some insight into what you do.

4.) Ignite is not work. Sales pitches are frowned upon at Ignite events, so chances are good you'll be stretching non-work muscles in creating your presentation. When was the last time you fired up PowerPoint to help you talk about something you love? (Sure, I love my work too--but you know what I mean.) It's a chance to share something about yourself in a less professional context. (One of my favorite talks from Ignite Portland 2007 was about raising chickens in the city.)

5.) Ignite is excellent practice. I'm a computer geek who spends most of his time behind a screen. I usually dread public speaking and I've been in the 45 minute talk spotlight a few times. Unlike long conference talks, Ignite talks are practically over before they begin, and you'll have some valuable speaking experience under your belt. It's a low-impact way to exercise your public speaking/presenting skills.

I will admit it's fun to kick back in the audience and watch the presenters sweat, but if you get up there and sweat a little yourself you won't regret it. But am I going to present at the next Ignite Corvallis? Hmm, I'll think about it.

Chris Nordyke Blogs about His Experience at Ignite Corvallis 1

Posted on February 16, 2009 by Jason P

Chris Nordyke was one of the brave souls who jumped in headfirst and did an Ignite Corvallis 1 presentation.

Here's a link to his presentation video: Ignite Corvallis Chris Nordyke, State Farm Insurance

I asked Chris to write about his experiences on his blog so he could give potential Ignite Corvallis 2 presenters some context for their burning ideas.

I'm highlighting my favorite chucnk here, but go to his blog and read the whole thing:

Chris Nordyke - Ignite Corvallis- Powerpoint doesn't have to be lame.

"First bit of advice- start mulling over your slide deck as soon as possible. Don't wait until a few days before the event. It is much more challenging than I thought, to put together a compelling/funny/persuasive deck of slides, when you've got exactly 20 to work with and they're auto-advancing every 15 seconds. So take your time, review it with friends or your spouse, and you're guaranteed to change it up at least 10 times before the event.

There were a ton of people at the event, and yet there was a great (dare I say) forgiving tone to the room. Everybody was excited, and in a way, living vicariously through the presenters. They're less spectators, and more participants. But it is a spectacle none the less. I was scheduled right in the middle of the roster. Fortunately, before my turn, there were several funny presentations to loosen up the room and also calm the nerves in the dugout.

I think my presentation went o.k. It was a bit dry, I wandered off script a bit, and got lost in some "uhs, ahs, and umms". Overall I'd give myself a B-. The cool part about it, was it really didn't matter how I did. People remembered the ones they loved, and the other ones just sort of faded into the background. It was a great platform to practice a skill that has enormous value to any artist, entrepreneur or technologist.

For those of you waffling a bit- Just go for it. Ignite is not only a great way to meet new people, but a safe venue to stick your neck out a bit and have fun trying something new."

Doesn't sound too bad does it? Were still looking for Presentations!
